Aminoglycosides a major class of antibiotics has a real dark side. Not talking about general side effects like nausea, diarrhoea, fatigue etc. Apart from these some major side effects can affect animal health especially of the neonatal and geriatric ones.
Must be wondering which antibiotics are in this class… Isn’t it?Commonly used are Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Neomycin, Streptomycin, Amikacin, Netilmicin and so on.
Nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, neuromuscular blockade are major toxic effects. Kidney damage, deafness and interrupting nerve signals between nerves and muscle causing inability to move muscle can be said in common terms.
So, cautious use of these class of antibiotics must be done especially in animals with renal impairment, slight deafness, mysthenia gravis. In addition, should be strictly avoided in pregnant, neonatal and geriatric patients.
